Circle Time is canceled for Tuesday Jan. 29 -- both the 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. programs. Circle Time will resume next Tuesday, Feb. 5.
Winter is a great time of year to curl up with a good book, with your child on your lap. Here's a look at some great new picture books focused on winter:
Children's Corner: Picture books to warm young hearts in wintertime - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Come warm up with some Fireside Tales tonight at 7:30 p.m. Master storyteller Candace Wolf will present a trio of tales -- great family fun! Our program is best for ages 5 & up, but younger children also are welcome with their grown-ups.
Winter's here, and for the next few weeks at our Tuesday Circle Time, we'll be learning some songs and rhymes to celebrate the season.
Here's an easy song (sung to the tune of Five Little Indians). Just flutter your fingers downward to make them into drifting snowflakes:
One little, two little, three little snowflakes,
Four little, five little, six little snowflakes,
Seven little, eight little, nine little snowflakes,
Ten little snowflakes drifting down.
Here's a rhyme about building a snowman. Just act it out as you say the words:
First the body, then the head.
A big black hat and a scarf of red.
Coal pieces for eyes and a carrot nose.
And a mouth full of pebbles in two shining rows!
Finally, here's a simple one focused on the joys of sledding. Do the first part slowly as you crunch in your boots up the hill, sled in hand. Then -- stop, get your breath at the top of the hill -- and then speed it up!
Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch
Up the hill so slow.......
Then, we're at the top of the hill!
And.....
Sliding, sliding, sliding, sliding
Down the hill we go!
Come try to guess the 2013 Caldecott Medal winner on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. All ages welcome; cookies & lemonade will be served! Using our big screen and special projector, we’ll look at some top possibilities for this year’s Caldecott Medal, which is awarded annually by the American Library Association to the best-illustrated picture book. The actual winner of the 2013 Caldecott Medal will be announced on the morning on Monday, Jan. 28 – let’s see how close we can get! No registration required, just come and read some wonderful books with us on a winter night. (NOTE: Both the program and the date of this event mark a change from the scheduled Caldecott Medal Birthday Club. If you have any questions, give us a call at 301-891-7259.)
