Come read Jumanji and The Polar Express Monday February 25 at 7 p.m. at our monthly Caldecott Birthday Club. This month, we're reading Caldecott Medal and Caldecott Honor books from the 1980's. In addition to author/illustrator Chris Van Allsburg's two classics, we'll also be reading Fables by Arnold Lobel and King Bidgood's in the Bathtub by Audrey Wood.
No registration is required for this program, which is fun for both kids and adults. Plus, we'll be serving lemonade and cookies! And yes, this is a just-scheduled program, and our second Caldecott Club meeting this month -- we're trying to keep on a schedule to have our big Caldecott Medal 75th Birthday party in May.
Our monthly Caldecott Birthday Club will take place this coming Monday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. at the Takoma Park Maryland Library. We'll be reading the newest Caldecott Medal and Honor books, and we'll offer lemonade and cookies to make this a truly festive event for all ages!
Our program this Monday is a change from the one that had been announced. We had been planning to continue our look back at the Caldecott Medal through the decades, looking specifically at the Caldecott winners from the 1980's. Instead, we've decided to showcase the 2013 winners, which were announced two weeks ago by the American Library Association. We'll get back to our decade-by-decade look in March.
No registration is required for our hour-long program and all ages -- kids and adults -- are most welcome!
The American Library Association has announced their choices for the best books for children and teens published last year. The most famous of these awards are the Caldecott Medal, given to the best-illustrated children's book, and the Newbery Medal, given to the best-written children's books. The 2013 Caldecott Medal was awarded to "This Is Not My Hat", written and illustrated by Jon Klassen, while the 2013 Newbery Medal was awarded to "The One and Only Ivan", written by Katherine Applegate. Here's a closer look at these two award-winning books: 2013 Caldecott and Newbery Medal winners
But the Caldecott and Newbery are just two of the awards given annually by the American Library Association to the best books for kids and teens. Here's a run-down of all the award winners:
