Due to the holiday, there will be no Circle Time at either 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 27. Also, there will be no Spanish Circle Time on Thursday, Dec. 29. Both programs will resume the following week.
Please join us tonight for our traditional -- and very fun! -- Winter Solstice celebration. We'll begin at 6:30 p.m. with musician Bill Jenkins, who will lead us in a drumming circle. Then, at 7:30 p.m., the Foggy Bottom Morris Men will swoop in with their songs, stories and dances. No registration -- just come and join in our celebration.
Each December, in my job as the children's book reviewer for Scripps Howard News Service, I try to pull together a list of my favorite books of the year. This year, it was particularly tough (but fun!) to choose my favorites, as 2011 was an especially good year for children's and teen books. And I had to leave out my favorite non-fiction books, at least for now, because I'm on the 2012 Sibert Medal Committee, tasked with choosing the best children's non-fiction book of the year. Our deliberations, like those of the Newbery and Caldecott Medal committees, are secret, and we are asked to keep even personal opinions to ourselves until the final winners are announced on January 23. Once that happens, I'll post a list of my non-fiction favorites of 2011. Meanwhile, if you're looking for a great holiday gift for the children or teens in your life, check out my list of 2011 favorites: Children's Corner: 'Press Here' best hits the spot
The Friends of the Takoma Park Maryland Library are holding a special Children's Book Sale at the Takoma Park Maryland Library on Saturday, December 17, from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. Come pick up some great holiday gifts at bargain prices at the book sale, which will take place in the rotunda around the Library's Computer Learning Center. All proceeds benefit the Library and are used to support such programs as Spanish Circle Time, French Circle Time, and many others -- including upcoming annual Winter Solstice program at Thursday, Dec. 22 at 6:30 p.m. At the sale, you'll be able to buy brand new review copies of books for kids from birth through teens. Books will be offered at bargain prices -- $2 for hardcovers (which normally cost $10-$18!) and $1 for paperbacks. We'll also have 10 copies of one of the hottest books in America -- Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever -- autographed by the author, Jeff Kinney. The autographed copies are $20 each. Come early for the best selection!
Make a day of it! That same day -- Saturday, Dec. 17 -- at 10:30, we'll offer our monthly French Circle Time, followed at 11:15 a.m. by our third annual Holiday Sing-A-Long with local musician Wendy Lanxner and her music students. Then, from 2-4 p.m., kids are invited to make holiday gifts. Registration is required for the gift-making program so we can be sure to have enough craft materials for all. To register, go to Program Registration - Takoma Park Maryland Library or call us at 301-891-7259.
Come join our monthly Comics Jam tomorrow, Tuesday December 6 at 4 p.m. in the Children's Room. In this fun program, we use our special ELMO projector to read comics together on the big screen. Our program will conclude with comics guru Dave Burbank taking drawing requests from the audience, who can watch via the big screen as Dave draws. No registration necessary for the program - just come and have fun!
This year the library's annual solstice party will be on the actual solstice day.
