School's about to start, and we've got a great collection of books to ease the transition from summer. Just look for the big yellow school bus hanging from the ceiling in the Children's Room, and you'll find our special display of school-themed books, including picture books, novels and non-fiction.
Is your child ready to move beyond beginning readers? Then it's time for early chapter books, also called books for emerging readers or just simply short chapter books.
In our library, we have a growing collection of these books, which are usually fiction, and which are readily identified by the "Easy Reading". We've just added some great new ones, which I recently reviewed:

Wands up! Get ready to cast a spell at our annual Summer Quest "Campfire," next Monday evening, August, 20, at 7 p.m. This year, our Summer Quest story is focused on the magic – and magic folk -- in everyday life, and at the "campfire" you’ll get a chance to create a wand and try out some spells. We’ll also read some stories about these "Hidden Folk" – fairies, imps, elves and others – and all participants will go home with the makings of that traditional campfire treat, "S’mores."
We encourage everyone to bring in some type of small stick to transform into a wand through the ribbons, beads and glitter we’ll have on hand. (We’ll also have some extra sticks, just in case). Registration is encouraged for this event, just so we can have enough craft supplies and “S’mores” makings for everyone! Register online at Program Registration - Takoma Park Maryland Library or call us at 301-891-7259.
One more thing: mark your calendars for our End-of-Summer Quest Party, which will take place on Monday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.! Thanks to the Friends of the Takoma Park Maryland Library for sponsoring our Summer Quest programs.
Publishers Weekly has started a new feature, in which they highlight what children's & teen books are being checked out most frequently at public libraries around the country. Our Library was the first to be spotlighted:What's Circulating at Takoma Park Maryland Library
