The Caldecott Medal -- given annually by the American Library Association to the best-illustrated children's book -- is now 75 years old and we're celebrating! Come join us each month for the Caldecott Birthday Club, where we'll read Caldecott Medal and Caldecott Honor books from different decades on the big screen, using our special ELMO document camera. Our first meeting is Monday, September 24 at 7 p.m. We'll be reading favorites from the first years of the Caldecott Medal, including "Madeline", "Make Way for Ducklings", "Stone Soup" and more! No registration is necessary for this hour-long program, and all are welcome -- kids and grown-ups. Reading award-winning picture books is a perfect way to unwind after a long day for people of any age!
Young artists: our next Scribbler's Cabal will take place on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 2-4 p.m. This is a change from the previously scheduled date of Sept. 22, so please mark your calendars! All young artists are welcome to come to this program, which is led by Dave Burbank, library assistant and artist extraordinaire. Bring your sketchbooks, pens/pencils, and your creativity, and come enjoy drawing with Dave. We ask you to register by going to Program Registration - Takoma Park Maryland Library or calling us at 301-891-7259. (NOTE: Registration doesn't obligate you to attend; it just lets us easily inform you of the dates of the Scribbler's Cabal program, which doesn't have a fixed schedule).

Two librarians -- public librarian Elizabeth Bird and school librarian Travis Jonker -- have come up with a unique way to have a conversation -- by holding up titles of picture books at each other. They created a video of their conversation and now Candlewick Press is using it to launch their year-long celebration called We Believe in Picture Books . Check out the librarians' hilarious book "conversation" Elizabeth Bird and Travis Jonker discuss picture books on Vimeo. Keep tabs on the Candlewick Press site for more videos about picture books -- one video a day for an entire year!
