Halloween Parade 09

This year the parade will immediately follow the 4 PM costume contest on Saturday the 31st. The parade goes from downtown (uptown?) Takoma Park down the hill to Piney Branch School - via Carroll and Philadelphia Avenues.

The parade is earlier than usual this year to leave children plenty of time to go trick or treating.

Flu ?

Updated 11/02

Emory University has developed an online assessment tool that can help you determine whether or not your symptoms indicate flu.
Flu self-assessment test

Interesting charts: Through week 37 of the year | After week 37 | Why 2 charts? Week 40 is the New Year for flu epidemiologists, the traditional beginning of the flu season. So their yearly charts begin and end at around that point.
Current information from the federal government | FAQ page.
Maryland flu watch
Montgomery County Health Department Call the flu hotline, 240.777.4200, or check their web site for information. All clinics have now been canceled.

Be a good citizen. Please participate in Maryland's tracking project. Most epidemiological surveys rely on information from doctors. But what about the larger group that doesn't go to the doctor for every cold or flu-like illness? You will be asked to report weekly on whether you, or any members in your household, have respiratory symptoms. And remember to use the self-assessment tool (above) if you do come down with something. That also contributes to the knowledge base.

Regular, seasonal, flu shots were available at the Community Center on Friday, October 9, 10-noon. Missed it? Visit your own doctor, check your local pharmacy, or use the special find-a-flu-shot search tool.

Program Cancellation

Tonight's College Bound program had to be canceled because the presenter needs to attend to an emergency. We hope to reschedule it for later. The other programs, October 13th (financing options) and 20th (SATs), should go on as planned.

Keep an eye on the events registration page for notice of a new date for the college selection program, and to sign up for the other two sessions.

The Bus Party

Ride-On route 18 now loops past the buildings formerly known as Takoma Towers. This means the residents now have public transportation to the library, the senior room in the community center, the police department, the swimming pool, the hospital, Langley Park, and the Takoma Metro station.

Come help celebrate on October 7th, 2 PM, in the senior room at 7500 Maple Avenue.
