On Monday, July 16, at 7 p.m., we are hosting a "Drop Everything & Read" – aka D.E.A.R. -- program in partnership with a local non-profit group called Small Things Matter. Founded by a local mother/daughter team, Roxanne and Lana Yamashita, Small Things Matter -- and its offshoot, Books for Bedtime -- aims to provide books to kids, especially those who don’t have the means to purchase their own. At our event, Roxanne and Lana will provide books for kids to read during our D.E.A.R. program – and then to take home and keep. We’ll also have snacks available to make this a fun summer night event.
Calling all rising kindergarteners. Enjoy a special storytime with Ms. Kati featuring books and activities focused on starting kindergarten. We will also have a craft and a snack. July 21, 10:30 a.m. Note: all children are welcome, but please know that the theme will be "Starting Kindergarten." Registration strongly encouraged.
Local artist Marta Gutierrez will help kids make a special, fun bookworm on Saturday, July 18, from 2-3:30 p.m. Our program will start with a look at Marta's own bookworms, which are currently on display in the Takoma Park Community Center as part of an exhibition on animals. After viewing Marta's bookworms, kids can then make their own. All materials provided, courtesy of the Friends of the Takoma Park Maryland Library. This activity is best for ages 5 up, but preschoolers are welcome with adult supervision and help. Registration strongly encouraged so we can make sure to have enough materials for all.
On Tuesday, July 31st, from 7-8:30 p.m., we'll be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the U.S. publication of the first Harry Potter book. Kids are invited to come and do a couple of Harry Potter-themed crafts and enjoy some of our special Harry Potter birthday cake and lemonade. Kids and grown-ups are invited to come in costume as their favorite Harry Potter character.
Thanks to the Friends of the Takoma Park Maryland Library for funding our snacks and supplies.
