Our Annual Poetry Party - Tonight!

The Friends of the Takoma Park Maryland Library invite you to read a poem at our Favorite Poem Evening Tuesday, April 26, 7:30 at the the library.

Choose a poem you’ve admired by a published poet (other than yourself) or a poem you’ve recently discovered. Poems written in all languages are welcome but please accompany them with an English translation.

If you have sent the name of the poem and author, it will be included in the printed program -- otherwise, just come with your poem.

Now in its 19th year, the favorite poem evening was originally conceived by then-U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky. Takoma Park’s gatherings have been warm community events. Last year's reading drew a record number of readers. All ages are welcome. Come! -- and bring your friends and neighbors.
Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Library.

Local author Anthony Hynes will read passages from his self-published memoir, which chronicles his childhood as a black boy adopted by two white mothers in D.C. in the ‘90s. When cancer afflicted one of Hynes’ mothers, and the courts threatened his legal guardianship, Hynes had to decide what his identity and his definition of family looked like. A Q&A with the author will follow the reading.

Tree Day 2016

Takoma Park's Arbor Day tree give-away is scheduled for tomorrow morning, April 2, at the library. The trees are tiny, free, and suitable for local conditions. Eventually, yes, they do get big.

National Arbor Day is the last Friday in April. Maryland Arbor Day is the first Wednesday in April. Why does the date vary from state to state and community to community? Because ideal tree planting times vary.
