We sometimes get reports of unplayable discs from our CD collections, and most can be fixed by simply washing them.
So before you conclude that a disc is unplayable, try washing it with some dish detergent in warm water. Rinse very thoroughly. Air dry or use a soft cloth (T-shirts work great). Try to play it again.
Of course this won't help a deeply scratched disc, but try a wash before concluding that the disc is bad.
