In 1993 Douglas Adams recorded an amazingly prescient bit in which he traced the the history of the book up to, and including, e-readers. His imagined e-reader was pretty much the same as the ones that are used now.
At that time Voyager Books was beginning to publish annotated digital editions of certain books, including Hitchhiker's Guide ..., to be played on standard desk computers.
Currently there is a contest, The International Douglas Adams Animation Competition, to create a visual accompaniment to Adams' original recording.
