In 1993 Douglas Adams recorded an amazingly prescient bit in which he traced the the history of the book up to, and including, e-readers. His imagined e-reader was pretty much the same as the ones that are used now.

Currently there is a contest, The International Douglas Adams Animation Competition, to create a visual accompaniment to Adams' original recording.
The winner is to be announced today.
