On May 22, the Maryland International Corridor CSAFE Initiative conducted their first Joint Bike Patrol, including seven police officers from Prince George’s County, Montgomery County and Takoma Park Police Departments. Officers from the three jurisdictions conducted high-visibility bike patrols throughout the Takoma-Langley Crossroads to deter crime and reduce resident fear of crime. Officers distributed educational fliers to community members, made five citizen contacts and 15 suspicious person stops of individuals known for being involved in gang and drug activity. They also issued six verbal warnings to drivers not wearing their seatbelt and ten warnings for drinking in public. One citation for trespassing was also issued.

These joint efforts are a great way to increase police visibility in the community and leverage departmental resources in a targeted geographical area. The next Joint Bike Patrol will be conducted in June.

POLICE CRIME REDUCTION INITIATIVE

As a result of the recent street robberies and assaults incidents along the New Hampshire Ave corridor, and at the direction of Chief Ronald Ricucci, Police Officials launched a high visibility safety and quality of life initiative in and around The New Hampshire Ave corridor and University Blvd.
Plainclothes and uniformed officers worked closely together to target a myriad of violations which effect the quality of life in this community. These violations included, loitering, trespassing, narcotics violations, public drunkenness and violations of the state motor-vehicle law. According to Lt. Tyrone Collington, Commander of the Criminal Investigations Division, these types of violations are often key indicators of locating and identifying suspects of more serious crimes which impact the community. Officials conducted traffic enforcement, conducted filed interviews and increased patrol presence in the affected area.

As a result of this enforcement initiative, Police Officials effectively identified known members of local street gangs, made several arrests and impounded two motor vehicles incidental to arrest associated with this initiative. Officials will continue a presence along the New Hampshire Ave corridor to abate any future incidents.
