Memorial Service to Impact Old Town

On Friday, Sept. 2, between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., the Takoma Park Police anticipate an impact on parking and traffic in Old Town Takoma Park due to a memorial service at the Takoma Seventh Day Adventist Church. The public's understanding and cooperation during the event will be appreciated.

A memorial service is scheduled at noon for Deputy Chief Charles Prince of the TPVFD. Chief Prince retired in August, after 50 years of dedicated service to the TPVFD and the citizens of the City and Montgomery County. In those 50 years, Chief Prince was a veteran of more than 23,000 fire-rescue alarms, the most by any member in TPVFD history. He passed away Sunday morning, Aug. 28. Given his long and distinguished service, large attendance at this service can be expected.

Stolen Vehicle Crashes on New Hampshire Avenue

August 28, 2005 (8:48am) A single car collision at 3 a.m. Sunday resulted in a secondary accident involving a Metrobus and closed southbound New Hampshire Avenue for more than five hours. Three occupants of the vehicle, reported stolen in Prince George’s County, were transported to local hospitals.

The southbound vehicle collided with a retaining wire on a utility pole and knocked down a highway sign before going over the median and striking a parked car on a service road. The car then careened into a residential yard where it struck two trees before stopping.

A Metrobus, braking to stop, skidded on the downed sign and struck a vehicle that had stopped when it witnessed the collision. No injuries were reported in this secondary accident. The Metrobus did not have any passengers.

The vehicle in the main accident, a Honda Accord, had been reported stolen in Prince George’s County in July. Later two men, who went to a local hospital on their own, were determined also to have been in the stolen car. The 20-year-old driver of the Accord was reported in satisfactory condition.

Initial investigation suggests speed was a factor in the collision, which occurred on wet roads. Charges are pending. The road was closed to repair utility poles and low-hanging wires at Holton and New Hampshire and reopened at about 8:30 a.m.

Remains Determined Not Human

Bones discovered during renovation work in the 6600 block of Westmoreland Avenue, Takoma Park, have been determined not to be human. City police have authorized construction to resume.

Work in the basement of a home was suspended Monday afternoon, August 1, after police and medical officers examined materials unearthed by workmen. The size and some characteristics suggested the bones might be human and they were taken for testing at the State Medical Examiner’s Office.

Shortly after noon today, tests showed the bones were not from a human. No further identification is being pursued.

A local contractor working in the basement of the private residence began to find the bones during the weekend. Workmen had removed several levels of flooring in the 1920s-era home when they began to unearth various bones. By late Monday morning the contractor had accumulated several specimens and contacted Takoma Park Police.

None of the bones were in whole pieces, which led to uncertainty regarding their origin. Also found were extremely old beer and alcohol bottles.

The home’s owner has lived in the residence for more than a decade.
