The Law
It is illegal for any person to manufacture, possess, store, offer for sale, sell, discharge, use, burn, or explode any fireworks in Montgomery County, Maryland, except that an authorized display may be conducted by a licensed pyrotechnic professional with a permit. Penalties for violations of the law include a fine up to $1,000 and/or six months in jail.
Amnesty Program
In Montgomery County, residents may turn in fireworks without fear of being arrested or fined. Montgomery County residents desiring to take advantage of this amnesty may have illegal fireworks picked up between Saturday, June 24, 2006, Saturday and July 8, 2006 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. by contacting a special "fireworks hotline" operated by the Montgomery County Fire Investigations and Explosives section. The hotline phone number to participate in the amnesty program is 240.777.2454. Citizens may also call the same number or the 'Arson Tipline' at 240.777.2263 to report illegal use of fireworks in Montgomery County.
Six Flags America has partnered with the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service and the Prince George's County Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department with this year's program.
As an incentive to remove illegal and dangerous fireworks off the streets and encourage residents to attend a public fireworks display, those participating in this year's campaign will be eligible for FREE Six Flags America admissions coupons.
Eligibility will be based on the quantity and/or value of fireworks received by Montgomery County residents. Generally, the fireworks turned in must be equal too, or near the value of dollar amount of Six Flags America coupons. This will be at the discretion of a Montgomery County Fire and Explosive Investigator.
In partnership with Prince George's County and Six Flags America, the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service will again participate in an amnesty program between June 24 and July 8, 2006. For information concerning the "Fireworks Amnesty" Program call the hotline at 240.777.2454. All fireworks are illegal in Montgomery County, Prince George's County and the City of Baltimore.
