Forum on Underage Drinking

“Start Talking Before They Start Drinking,” a free community forum on underage drinking, is designed for parents of youth ages eight and older. The meeting will take place Thursday, March 30, 7-9 p.m. in the auditorium at 850 Hungerford Drive, Rockville.

Research shows parents generally underestimate the extent of alcohol used by youth and its negative consequences, with a vast majority viewing underage drinking as inevitable. Many parents find it difficult to know when and how to start conversations with their children about the topic.

The forum is part of a prevention campaign that seeks to overcome parents’ misconceptions about underage drinking. For more information and to reserve a space, contact the Dept. of Liquor Control Outreach Office and speak with Kathie Durbin, 240-777-1917, or Emily DeTitta, 240-777-1904.

The event, part of a national campaign, is jointly sponsored by more than a dozen organizations including the county schools’ PTA and Montgomery County Police.

The Takoma Park Police segment of the June 2005 Takoma Park Snapshots presented a local perspective on youth alcohol and drug use. Copies are available in the library.
