Takoma Park Police responded to a complaint for a residential burglary this morning (Feb. 6, 10:30 a.m.) in the 7100 block of Maple Avenue. The victim was not harmed and, although responding officers stopped possible suspects, no arrests were made pending further investigation.
The homeowner was in his bedroom when an unknown man opened the door. The suspect threatened the victim, demanded and took property, and fled. The homeowner waited until the house seemed quiet and then called the police, leaving the home to look for the suspect. Nine officers canvassed the area for up to an hour without positively identifying a suspect, who had fled with a laptop.
The suspect appears to have entered the home through an unsecured door. Because the suspect encountered the victim and made a verbal threat, the crime is being classified as a home invasion robbery.
The suspect is described as a black male, less than 30 years of age, medium complexion and build, wearing a black knit cap and jacket.
The Victor sector area, along the D.C. border, has experienced burglaries and attempts sporadically, especially during the day. Residents are encouraged to contact the police at 301/270-1100 if they observe suspicious behavior. This is activity out of the norm for time or place, such as strangers going to side or back doors, looking through windows, or walking through back yards. Doors should be secured, whether residents are home or away.
Anyone with information regarding this event should call Takoma Park Police at 301/270-1100.
