Accreditation Process to Hear Public Comments

The City of Takoma Park Police Department will be visited by assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), October 22 - 26, 2005, inspecting all aspects of police operations and evaluating the Department’s compliance with hundred of official standards.

The assessors will hold a public meeting to receive comments about the Department’s services and performance on Sunday, October 23, at 3:00 p.m. in the Auditorium (formerly Council Chambers) in the Municipal Building, 7500 Maple Avenue. Statements, no longer than 10 minutes per person, will be heard until all interested persons have an opportunity to speak.

The assessors also will be available to receive direct telephone calls from citizens on Monday, October 24, between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. (only) at 301/891-7137. Persons wishing to offer written comments about TPPD's ability to meet accreditation standards may write to: CALEA, 10306 Eaton Place, Suite 320, Fairfax, VA 22030-2201.

The CALEA accreditation program is a voluntary opportunity for law enforcement agencies to demonstrate that they meet an established set of standards related to agency operations. The standards cover every aspect of police operations from equipping a police cruiser to maintenance of records, handing of prisoners, and conduct of traffic stops to criminal investigations.
