Funeral for Annie Cotton, Crossing Guard

The Takoma Park Police are saddened to announce the death of Annie Cotton, a member of its School Crossing Guard unit. Ms. Cotton, 76 and a longtime resident of the city, passed away on July 4, after a brief illness.

A viewing is scheduled for 10 a.m, Saturday, July 9, at the New Bethel Baptist Church, 6440 Piney Branch Road NW, near Georgia Avenue in the District. A funeral service follows at 11 a.m. Interment is scheduled later in North Carolina.

After serving as a crossing guard in the 1980s and a break in service, “Miss Annie” began again as a school crossing guard in August 1995, most recently working the intersection of Holly and Philadelphia Avenues.

Between the middle school and elementary school shifts, Ms. Cotton would often visit at the Takoma Park Elementary School. She always had encouraging words for students, parents and staff, and often small gifts for needy or special students. Ms. Cotton was an avid reader at the Takoma Park Library, spending time there before her afternoon posts.

Miss Annie is survived by a daughter, Ann Elizabeth, and son, George Perry, Jr. Messages of condolence for the family may be sent to 7600 Maple Avenue, Apt. 801, Takoma Park, MD 20912.
