Come to a special Black History program tonight about an inspiring and overlooked African-American hero. Author Gigi Amateau will talk about her book,Come August, Come Freedom, which combines fact and fiction to tell the true story of a literate slave named Gabriel who attempted to incite a rebellion among his fellow slaves in Richmond, Va. in 1800. The rebellion failed, due to a massive storm and the betrayal of friends, but Amateau's book offers a riveting look at a true freedom fighter. Politics & Prose Bookstore will sell copies of Amateau's book at tonight's event, but absolutely no purchase is necessary. Our event is free and open to all, although the book is aimed at ages 12 up.

We're live-streaming John and Hank Green's Carnegie Hall program tonight at the Takoma Park Community Center in two locations. Join us!

Registration is full for the auditorium, but we also will have the program running in the Azalea Room. Our program is free! For those interested, however, Politics & Prose bookstore folks will be selling copies of books by John Green and music by Hank Green, as well as t-shirts and posters.

John Green is the author of the best-selling young adult novel The Fault in Our Stars. He and his brother Hank Green created the Vlog Brothers YouTube channel and the Nerdfighters group. Together, they're a dynamic duo, and they'll be joined tonight by the Mountain Goats music group and several other young adult authors, whose names are being kept under wraps.

John Green has asked fans to send questions for tonight to Twitter via this hashtag: #eveningofawesome. If you've got a question, send it soon!

Meanwhile, here's a link to an interview with John Green shortly after The Fault In Our Stars was published last year:

Join us at the Tk Pk City auditorium on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. to watch YA star author John Green -- live-streamed from Carnegie Hall! We're partnering with Politics & Prose Bookstore to sponsor a live-streaming of "An Evening of Awesome." This is an event hosted by John Green, author of the best-selling teen book The Fault in Our Stars, and his brother Hank Green, original creator of the Green Brothers' "Nerdfighters " website. The actual "Evening of Awesome " will take place at Carnegie Hall in New York City and is sold-out. But the program, which will include surprise visits by other authors and music by the Mountain Goats, will be live-streamed, and so we'll be showing it on the big screen in Takoma Park's Community Center auditorium. Come and gather with other John and Hank Green fans -- and other "Nerdfighters "!-- to enjoy this unique program. Politics & Prose will be selling books at the program, but no purchase is necessary to attend. Spaces are limited, however, so registration is required. You must register online; to register, go to:

Sorry for the prolonged interweb silence, guys! The past couple of weeks have been kind of batty for your intrepid intern! I was stuck in NY for a week after Sandy (I was fine, don't worry), and then grad school dumped a bunch of work on my head. (While grad school is waaaaaay more fun than high school, it's also more work.) I will try to make up for the missed book trailers later in the week. Anyway, without further ado, the stuff you're here to see:

Teen Program:
If you haven't voted for the teen program yet, get down to the library quickly! Voting is going to end pretty soon, and you don't want to be stuck with some boring junk.

2) Huffington Post has this rant about the media mislabeling books for older kids (one example given is The Westing Game) as Young Adult books. Does this matter?

We want you to vote on the theme of our next teen/young adult program, which will take place further on this year. (No seriously, vote on it. I'm organizing it, so I promise it will be cool.) The four options are (drumroll please):

1) Zombies: Games and activities related to the upcoming zombie apocalypse

2) Hunger Games: You read the series, now volunteer as tribute yourself (minus the killing and dying part)

3) Be a Kid Again: Listen to your favorite picture books read aloud, color inside the lines (or outside the lines, if you want), and have fun just being a kid again!

4) Crafting Upcycled Holiday Gifts: Learn to make holiday gifts for your friends and family using recycled materials

You can vote at the library main desk. (Ask if you don't see the voting box, I promise none of us bite. Well, I can't vouch for all the library staff's free time activities, but biting in the workplace is something we strongly frown upon.)
